Any beach, any Saturday, roughly nine a.m.: the wildlife begins to arrive. We have spent years in the field ~ our field is technically a T-shirt shop, but it faces the beach spiritually ~ and we are ready to publish. What follows is the definitive taxonomy of beach day species. Field marks, habitats, calls. You will find someone you love in this guide. You will also find yourself, and you may not be who you hoped.
The Elegant Strider.
Observe her on our pink tee, captured in her natural habitat: mid-stroll at the waterline, neck curved like punctuation, palms bowing behind her, the sun going down in her honor ~ and a beach ball rolling past her feet that she has decided not to acknowledge. That is the field mark, right there. Chaos rolls by; the Strider strides. She did not come to play volleyball. She came to walk the shoreline like it owes her rent. Call: none. The Strider does not call. The Strider is called upon.

The Boundary Crab.
Small. Red. Absolutely certain. Our specimen stands mid-beach on our navy sweatshirt hoisting a homemade sign ~ STAY OFF MY BEACH ~ with the eyes of a creature who has been pushed exactly one umbrella too far. Around him, the evidence of invasion: someone's starfish, someone's flip-flop, scattered shells. He didn't want it to come to this. And yet. Every family has one Boundary Crab ~ the one who arrives at dawn to claim the good spot, plants the umbrella like a flag, and defends the towel line all day with nothing but posture. The shirt says Don't Worry, Be Crabby, and that is the whole biography. Call: "we were HERE first."

The Recluse.
Rarely photographed, ours made it onto a tee: a sloth who has claimed an island the size of a kiddie pool ~ two palms and a hand-span of sand ~ and reclined on it with a garnished cocktail and zero plans. GO AWAY, the sky says over him, on his behalf. ISLAND TIME, the sand agrees below, with a period. The Recluse is at the beach WITH your group, technically. He is also fifty feet away behind a windbreak he built in silence. Do not take it personally. Habitat: the far edge of the towel archipelago. Call: a long exhale, contented, final.

The Provisioner.
Arrives with a cooler that requires two people and a plan. Has sunscreen in three strengths, a backup hat, and sandwiches in an order known only to her. Nothing on this beach can go wrong that she has not packed for, and things will still be handed to her all day like she's a concierge. She is the reason the beach day works, and she knows it, and she'd like one uninterrupted hour, and she will not get it.
The Optimist.
Believes the water is warm ("once you're in"). Believes the clouds will clear. Believes one more coat of sunscreen will save him, at four p.m., which is late for that belief. Burnt in the shape of his own sunglasses by dinner, and completely, sincerely happy.
Migration notes.
The species travel together ~ that's the joke and the whole point. One cooler, one umbrella line, one Strider pretending not to know the Optimist who is currently yelling about a wave. The guide keeps growing over in Sass in Paradise and Chillin' Out, where the rest of the wildlife lives between sightings.
Wear your species. Deny nothing. The beach already knows.
