Somewhere along the way, somebody decided grown-ups dress in three colors: black, grey, and a beige called "greige" that we refuse to say out loud a second time. Closets full of shirts chosen specifically so nobody would notice them. Whole wardrobes engineered for camouflage in an office that doesn't even have a jungle.
We would like to formally object.
The loud shirt has been unfairly treated for decades, and we say that as the shop that prints them on purpose. Loud is not the same as careless. Loud is a decision. When you put on a shirt the color of a lagoon at ten in the morning, you are telling everyone at the grocery store that you have somewhere better to be in your head, and honestly ~ they already suspected it. The shirt just confirms the rumor kindly.
Take our Bird of Paradise. Royal blue, and in the middle of it a whole small world under a crescent sun: the flower arcing over a lagoon like it's presenting the beach to you personally, palms leaning in, plumeria crowding the bottom of the circle around one word, ALOHA, on a banner, in case there was any confusion about the shirt's position on things. You cannot wear this and have a completely terrible Tuesday. The shirt simply will not allow it. We have never once seen it happen.

Or go further. Go flamingo. Ours is wearing a sombrero and shaking two maracas under a string of party flags, mid-fiesta, on a shirt the exact pink of the bird itself ~ a flamingo throwing a party in a flamingo's honor, worn by a person who understands that some days need to be turned up manually. This is the shirt for the day you decide the day will be good, out loud, in advance. Confidence looks like a lot of things. Sometimes it looks like a bird with percussion.

Here is what actually happens when you wear the loud shirt, and we know because our people report back. Strangers talk to you. Not in the alarming way ~ in the "where is that FROM" way. Kids point at the flamingo like you're a parade. Somebody's grandmother tells you about her honeymoon in Hilo in 1974, and it's the best story you hear all month. The loud shirt is a porch light for good conversations. Turn it on and see what flies in.
And the objections, we've heard them all. "I can't pull it off." Incorrect ~ the shirt does the pulling; you just have to stand in it. "It's not professional." Neither is the fluorescent lighting they make you sit under, and nobody writes think-pieces about that. "It'll show a stain." Friend, so does greige, and greige wasn't even fun before the stain.
The truth is simpler and a little sweeter than all of that. Life hands out plenty of grey days without any help from your closet. The loud shirt is a small, wearable vote for the other kind ~ the beach-day kind, the laughing-too-hard kind, the kind you actually remember later. So here's the assignment. Pick the one that feels slightly too loud for you. That's the correct one ~ that little flinch is just your greige years letting go. Wear it somewhere ordinary. Count the conversations.
